April 2022 Announcements

The April club meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, April 27.  This month we will meet at the Golden Pagoda Chinese Restaurant in Bellville.  Dinner at 6 pm, club meeting at 7 pm.

Club meetings are held on the lAST Wednesday of the month (except for Nov & Dec)

New members are welcome!  You don't need to be a radio expert, all you need is to have an interest in radio communications.  For your convenience, you can complete the following application form and mail it to the address above, or bring it to the next club meeting.

Club Events:

On Saturday, April 9, Gary KF5ZRT, Ray WA5IWB and Roger N5RWK activated the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park (K-3512) for a Parks on the Air event.  Weather was great and we arrived a little after 8 am.  We used battery power to operate FT8, CW and SSB.  Gary used a link dipole antenna, and Ray used his Mag Loop antenna.  WotB Park is a great place to operate - lots of picnic tables on concrete pads, and it's easy to put up a portable shelter to get some shade.  After the event, lunch was had at Carroll's Giant Burgers in Navasota.

 VE Testing News:

Our group is affiliated with W5YI-VEC for administering tests.  If you are a prospective ham, or already a ham looking to upgrade your license, send an email to info at w5sfa.org for information or to schedule your test.

Note that the FCC will begin charging a $35 fee for new licenses, renewals and vanity calls beginning on April 19.  License upgrades and changes of address are exempt from this new fee.

There is now an online Technician Class license class video available on Youtube.  Copy this link into a new page in your browser:

Repeater News:

The downtown Houston 146.96Mhz repeater has been relocated to Cat Spring, and the club has terminated its presence in downtown Houston.  The repeater is currently in operation at the 146.96- frequency, with a tone squelch of 103.5.  Range is currently limited due to antenna height.  Later this year the repeater will have a new home in Wallis, TX.

The Columbus repeater is now Digital C4FM only, in order to facilitate future linking with Bellville.  Please note that you will not be able to use the repeater with FM analog!  The Columbus repeater has a DG-ID of 01.
